Harry Lea was an enterprising young man in Perth. He began selling handmade confections from a pushcart when jobs were hard to find. He quickly discovered that folks loved his sweets. Good things happen when you have a good product, and it wasn’t long before Harry opened his first store in Sydney. He named the company after his first son Darrell, and then one night, after lots of trial and error, Harry and Darrell hit upon the perfect slow eating liquorice. It was chewy, full of flavor, and a good, long-lasting treat perfect for the long, hot Australian days. Of course the company grew, and Darrell Lea became the gold standard of liquorice in Australia.
